Software Engineer Resume 2026: Stack-First, Impact-Proved
Technical recruiters scan for stack match in the first 5 seconds. Hiring managers scan for scale and ownership signals in the first 30. Both audiences need to see specific evidence—not "experienced in various programming languages."
The Stack-First Structure
Tech Stack Block
Immediately after your summary. Languages, Frameworks, Cloud, Databases, Tools—each category on one line with specific named items.
Impact Bullets
Every experience bullet uses the STAR-T format: what you built + the stack + the scale + the outcome. No bullet ends without a measurable result.
GitHub Link

Tech Skills Categorisation
Weak (Generic):
- Programming, Web development
- Databases, Problem solving
- Agile, Communication
Strong (Specific):
- Languages: Python, TypeScript, Go, Rust
- Frameworks: React, FastAPI, gRPC
- Cloud: AWS (Lambda, ECS, RDS), Terraform
- Databases: PostgreSQL, Redis, DynamoDB
The Tech Bullet Format
Format: Action + Stack + Scale + Outcome
"Built" [what] "using" [specific stack] "serving" [scale] "with" [performance outcome] or "achieving" [business result]. Example: "Built GraphQL API using Node.js and Apollo, serving 2.4M daily requests at 99.97% uptime—reducing P95 latency from 380ms to 45ms." All four components. Under 25 words.
Ownership Language
Senior engineers use ownership verbs: "Designed," "Architected," "Led," "Built from scratch," "Owned." Mid-level: "Built," "Implemented," "Developed," "Rewrote." Junior: "Contributed to," "Helped build," "Worked on." Your verb choice signals your actual seniority—match it to the level you're applying for, not exceeding it in ways that collapse under interview questioning.
Project Section for Early Career
If under 3 years of experience: add a Projects section immediately after Skills with 2–3 entries in the same STAR-T format. "Built [X] using [stack] for [purpose]—achieved [measurable outcome, users, or performance metric]." Include GitHub links. Projects with public code that you can walk through technically are equivalent to professional experience for entry-level engineering screeners.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I list every programming language I know?
No—list only languages from the past 3 years that you'd be comfortable being tested on in a technical interview. Three well-evidenced languages you can discuss deeply outperform ten listed languages that collapse under questioning. Tiering helps: "Proficient: Python, TypeScript | Familiar: Rust, Go | Prior experience: Java, C++" signals honest self-awareness—a valued trait in engineering teams.
Should a software engineer resume be one or two pages?
In 2026: 0–4 years experience—1 page, strongly preferred. 5–12 years—1–2 pages. Senior/Staff/Principal—2 pages. Architect/VP Engineering—2 pages with executive summary. Concise, dense, technically-specific content beats length every time.
