CV & Resume Conversion 2026: The Two-Way Conversion System
The academic CV and corporate resume serve entirely different audiences with entirely different expectations. Converting between them isn't editing—it's reconstruction. Done correctly, the output reads as native to its target audience. Done incorrectly, it reads as neither.
The Core Structural Differences
CV → Resume: The Compression Protocol
Step 1: Identify Your Relevance Inventory
From your full CV, identify: (a) 3 roles or projects most directly relevant to the target position. (b) 5 skills or competencies demanded by the JD that you have evidence for. (c) 1–2 measurable outcomes from your scholarly work that translate to business impact. These 9–10 items are the content for your entire resume. Everything else stays in the CV.
Step 2: Translate Academic Language
Academic achievement → business outcome. "Supervised 6 doctoral candidates" → "Mentored and professionally developed 6 researchers, all of whom completed their programmes within timeline." "Principal investigator on £420,000 ESRC grant" → "Secured and managed £420,000 research programme budget, delivering all outputs within timeline and on budget." Preserve the credibility of the academic signal while making it legible to a non-academic hiring manager.
Step 3: Restructure for ATS
Add: professional summary (2 sentences), skills section with JD-aligned vocabulary, standard section headers. Remove: publication lists, conference abstracts, grant details, teaching philosophy, service roles. Verify with plain-text test before submitting to any portal.
Resume → CV: The Expansion Protocol
Step 1: Add Complete Academic Record
Compile all: peer-reviewed publications (categorised by type), conference presentations (invited vs. contributed), book chapters, working papers under review, and forthcoming publications. Format each entry in the citation style standard for your field (APA, MLA, Chicago). Your name bolded as author in each citation.
Step 2: Add Teaching and Service Record
Teaching: every course taught with institution, level (undergraduate/postgraduate), and year. Service: journal editorial boards, grant review panels, conference organisation, professional association roles, department and university committee service. These sections demonstrate scholarly citizenship—evaluated heavily for academic positions.
Step 3: Write the Research Focus Statement
2–3 sentences at the top (before or replacing your professional summary) defining your research agenda: "My research investigates [topic] using [methodology], contributing to [field's question]. Current projects include [A] (funded by [body]) and [B] (in collaboration with [institution])." This gives the search committee a schema for reading everything that follows.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does CV-to-resume conversion take?
First conversion from an established CV: 2–3 hours for a thorough job. This includes building your relevance inventory, translating achievement language, restructuring sections, and verifying ATS safety. Subsequent tailored versions for different roles: 20–30 minutes, starting from your master resume. The first conversion is a substantial investment; subsequent ones compound on it. Many academics completing their first industry application underestimate this and submit insufficiently converted CVs—the most common mistake in the academic-to-industry transition.
